Before Filler, Wipes One Cheek and Blames
Her Foundation

"Turn your right cheek to me."

Tessa Grant, RN, already had a cleansing wipe in her hand.

Maureen Ashby, 59, was in Tessa's treatment chair at a med spa in Columbus, Ohio, for a filler consult. She wanted the lines beside her mouth and around her eyes gone, and she had a list of questions typed into her phone.

Tessa has done filler and Botox for 15 years. She had studied Maureen's face under the exam light for a long minute, frowning, before she reached for the wipes. She cleaned the right cheek only. The left kept its makeup.

She passed Maureen a hand mirror. "Now look."

Maureen held it close and looked from one side of her face to the other.

On the clean side: No powder caught in her smile lines. No cakey creases under her eyes. No dry, chalky film.

Her foundation had been drying into every crease and catching the light. On her left cheek it still was.

"I won't fill these," Tessa said.

She said she wouldn't put a needle in lines that makeup was drawing on. Then she reached into her own purse.

"Let me show you what I wear."

Out came a small round compact with a little mushroom applicator.

"You wear this yourself?"

"Every day. Hold still, this takes a few seconds."

She tapped a little onto the clean cheek.

Maureen picked up the mirror again. The right side looked like skin, smooth and a little glowy, and the lines by her mouth stayed soft. The left side looked dry and chalky, with powder caught in each line.

Tessa snapped the compact shut.

"After 50, most foundations dry out on your skin and sink into whatever lines you've got."

Why Most Foundation Makes Skin Over 50 Look Older

Skin past 50 holds less water than it used to.

A lot of us still wear matte foundation with powder pressed on top. Both dry down on thirsty skin, settle into creases and look heavier as the day goes on.

A cushion holds a hydrating liquid foundation in a soft sponge.

No thick layer. No caking in your lines.
No heavy, masky feel.

The one in Tessa's bag also has skincare in it.

Hyaluronic acid for hydration, plus sweet almond oil and jojoba oil.

There's mineral SPF 30 from titanium dioxide too.

How the Cushion Goes On, Step by Step

Moisturize first (you can skip primer), press lightly into the cushion, tap from the center of your face out, and add more only where you need it.

  • Step 1

    Prep

  • Step 2

    Press

  • Step 3

    Tap

  • Step 4

    Build

On Maureen's cheek it took one light press and a few taps.

That compact was the Luvie Glow Foundation Cushion.

Luvie made it for dry, sensitive and mature skin.

Maureen's Story Starts With One Birthday Video...

Before

After

"My granddaughter Lily is 9, and she films everything. At my 59th birthday dinner, she had Jess's new phone on me while I blew out my candles.

Jess posted the video in our family group chat that night, and I didn't think about it until I was in bed and zoomed in on my own face.

I got up, went into the bathroom so I wouldn't wake Glen, turned on the big light over the sink, and pressed play.

Up close, my foundation had cracked around my mouth, caked under my eyes, and stopped in a hard line along my jaw.

Under the video, Jess had written that I looked beautiful. I sat down on the edge of the tub and said it out loud: 'I look painted and tired.' Then I watched it again.

Everyone at that table had seen the same face. They were too kind to say anything.

And I had put that makeup on so carefully that morning, the way I had every morning for years.

For about 25 years my routine never changed: matte full-coverage liquid foundation, concealer, then pressed powder to set it.

Every year I used more.

More concealer where the lines got deeper. More powder over that.

Every extra layer slid into my lines, and by afternoon my makeup was drawing them on darker than they really were.

Powder collected in the lines across my forehead and turned them into stripes.

Concealer creased into little folds under my eyes by mid-morning.

Foundation pooled in the lines beside my mouth every time I smiled or talked.

And along my jaw there was an edge where my makeup stopped and my neck began.

That was how my 59th birthday was going to look forever, and I hated every second of it.

I decided the lines were the problem, and lines were something I could pay to fix.

So I booked a filler consult with Tessa Grant, a nurse injector at a med spa here in Columbus. The price they gave me on the phone for my mouth and eyes was more than I wanted to spend. I said yes anyway.

Glen said it was my face and my call. I put it on the calendar before I could change my mind.

Tessa studied my face for a minute and reached for a cleansing wipe, cleared my right cheek only, and handed me a mirror. The lines on that side looked so much softer."

My First Morning With the Compact
Took About a Minute

"Before I even left the med spa parking lot, I ordered the compact Tessa wears, the Luvie Glow Foundation Cushion, in Soft Buttercream.

Tessa's whole method was moisturize, press, tap, from the center of my face out, and she said to leave my powder in the drawer.

'A little goes a long way,' she said. 'Build it only where you need it.'

'If it looks like makeup, you used too much.'

I'll admit I had my doubts.

Every foundation I had ever bought said it wouldn't crease, and every one of them was sitting in my lines by lunch.

The first morning after it arrived, I pressed the mushroom applicator into the cushion once, lightly, and tapped it on over my moisturizer from my nose outward. My whole face took about a minute.

It felt like nothing. I kept touching my cheek to make sure it was there, and Glen asked why I was poking at my face.

In the mirror, it looked like my own skin.

The redness around my nose looked even, and there was no makeup sitting in the lines by my mouth.

At 4 PM, I Opened the Compact in My Car

  • Nothing had cracked around my mouth, where it always went first.
  • Under my eyes it still looked smooth, with no concealer caked into the creases.
  • My forehead lines had no powder in them, because I hadn't used any.
  • My jaw had no makeup edge. I did one quick touch-up on my chin and drove home.

That time of day used to be the worst, because by 4 o'clock my old foundation had cracked and slid into every line I had.

That morning, one of the dentists I work for stopped at the front desk and looked at me twice. 'Maureen, were you on vacation?' he asked. I hadn't been anywhere.

I told him it was just new makeup. He didn't look like he believed me, and I took that as a compliment."

Then the People Who Know My Face Noticed...

"At book club that week, a friend asked who was doing my hair now. My hair hasn't changed in years.

Glen said I looked rested, which from Glen is a lot.

Then Jess came over for Sunday dinner and kept staring at me across the table.

She waited until Lily left the room, leaned in, and quietly asked if I'd finally had something done. I laughed, went to my purse, and handed her the compact.

She tapped a little on the back of her hand, then asked for the website and ordered one for herself before dessert.

The picture I keep going back to is from Lily's school recital a few weeks later.

For years I was the one at the end of the row, half behind Glen, or the one holding the camera so I wouldn't have to be in it.

This time I stood in the front row next to Lily, smiling with my teeth.

When Jess sent it to me, I zoomed in on my own face the same way I did with that birthday video, looking for cracks.

I didn't find a single one around my mouth or my eyes.

The lines are all still there. I'm 59. With the cushion on they just look softer, and there's no makeup caked in them drawing an arrow to each one.

When I called the med spa to cancel the follow-up Tessa had penciled in, I told her the Luvie Glow Foundation Cushion she tapped on my cheek that day was the whole reason.

She asked when I wanted to rebook. I told her to put me down for 'maybe someday.'

She laughed and said that was the answer she was hoping for.

The compact lives in my purse now. I do my face in about a minute at the bathroom sink, I still check it in the car at 4 o'clock out of habit, and my old matte foundation and pressed powder went in the trash the week after the recital.

Ever since I switched over to the Luvie Glow cushion, I've started to like my face in photos again.

Glen printed the recital picture, and it's on our fridge now with me right there in the front row."

3 Reasons This Cushion Works on Mature Skin:

1. It Sits Smooth Over Fine Lines All Day

Before

After

Matte formulas dry down fast on skin that already holds less water, and then they settle into every line.

By lunch you're looking at a map of your own creases, drawn in foundation, and pressing on more powder makes them look deeper.

The Luvie cushion goes on thin.

The liquid is light and breathable, with hyaluronic acid for hydration.

Dimethicone smooths the look of fine lines and pores, so the color lies flat over them and stays out of the folds beside your mouth.

It feels like a moisturizer with color in it, and it wears all day with very little fading.

Your face still moves the way it always has, and the color moves with it.

2. Coverage You Build One Tap at a Time

Some mornings you need very little.

Other days the redness on your cheeks and around your nose wants more help.

With a bottle and a sponge, it's easy to put the same thick layer over your whole face.

The mushroom applicator picks up a little from the cushion and lets you build from medium to full coverage.

Tap one sheer layer from the center of your face outward, then go back over redness or uneven spots with another tap.

Redness looks softer and your tone looks even, while the lightly covered areas still read as skin.

The compact fits in a purse, so a midafternoon touch-up takes a few seconds over the spot that needs it.

3. Skincare-Style Ingredients in a Compact

After 50 your skin wants moisture all day, and a lot of foundation formulas leave it feeling tight by noon.

The Luvie Glow Foundation Cushion mixes hyaluronic acid and a peptide complex into the foundation itself.

Sweet almond oil and jojoba oil help keep it from feeling dry. Aloe vera and rose extract are there to calm and soothe, which matters if your cheeks flush easily, and cactus extract adds antioxidants.

Titanium dioxide gives the formula mineral SPF 30, which is a nice thing to find inside a makeup compact.

Luvie calls it hydrating, never heavy. You only need a light press per layer, so it feels like almost nothing on your skin.

No primer needed.
No brush, no setting powder.

Tessa's Take: Check Your Makeup Bag First

Tessa Grant, RN, a nurse injector in Columbus for 15 years, explains why she sends some patients to their makeup bag before she reaches for a syringe:

"Most weeks a woman sits in my chair and points at the lines around her mouth. Up close, I can see foundation dried into every one of them. It dries down into the creases and the powder catches the light. I can fill those lines, and if the makeup stays the same she'll still see creases by 3 pm. So before we talk about syringes, I wipe one cheek clean and let her look."

Women who bought it on Luvie's site have rated it 4.8 out of 5 from 83,387 reviews, and Tessa says the comments sound a lot like what she hears in her chair.

Tessa, who wears the cushion herself, puts it plainly: "Try a hydrating cushion for a few weeks first. If the lines still bother you once your foundation stops drawing them in, come back and we'll talk."

Skin That Looks Like Skin Again

Tomorrow at 7 am, you tap on your foundation and head out. Then you check the mirror at the end of a long workday:

  • It still looks like your skin, just more even
  • Nothing has settled in your smile lines
  • Redness looks evened out
  • No dry, flaky patches on your cheeks or chin
  • It still feels comfortable at 6 pm

Imagine someone takes a photo at a family dinner and you don't ask them to delete it.

Imagine doing your makeup with a moisturizer, one compact and a few taps, and having it look finished before you've had your first sip of coffee.

Imagine a 4 pm touch-up that takes a tap or two in the car mirror, because nothing has cracked or caked under your eyes since you left the house that morning.

You Have 2 Ways to Go From Here

It comes down to what's in your makeup bag.

Path #1: Stick With Your Old Routine

Keep layering matte foundation and pressed powder every morning, and add a little more each year to cover what the last layer made worse.

Keep checking the mirror at 3 pm to find it cracked around your mouth, and keep pricing filler for lines your makeup is drawing on.

Keep hiding at the back of family photos.

Path #2: Switch to a Cushion Made for Mature Skin

Starting at $39.99 with autoship, you get a hydrating cushion made for dry, sensitive and mature skin, with buildable medium-to-full coverage and mineral SPF 30.

Press on a thin layer with the mushroom applicator and tap a bit more where you need it. Then get through a whole workday with makeup that still looks like skin, and keep the compact in your purse for a quick touch-up.

I know which path I'd take. Maureen already took it.
